February 4, 2025 – To mark the World Cancer Day , held under the theme “United by Unique,” KENCO collaborated with other civil society organizations (CSOs) to host a high-impact media breakfast at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi.

The event convened mainstream media, bloggers, influencers, and content creators to highlight critical gaps in cancer care and advocate for urgent policy action.

Discussions focused on limited access to essential cancer drugs like the Herceptin, uncertainties in Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) under the newly formed Social Health Authority (SHA) coverage, and delays in diagnosis and treatment, all of which impact patient outcomes.

Cancer survivors shared personal experiences, shedding light on the challenges of navigating Kenya’s healthcare system and reinforcing the need for immediate reforms.

To enhance cancer awareness, journalists received training on cancer prevention, early screening, HPV vaccination, and ethical storytelling to combat misinformation and drive public engagement.

Key recommendations included:
✅ Ensuring a consistent supply of essential cancer medications

✅ Expanding SHA coverage for affordable cancer treatment

✅ Implementing policy reforms to improve service delivery

KENCO and partners urged stakeholders to champion stronger policies, increased cancer funding, and digital advocacy to drive policy change.

The event underscored the media’s role in shaping public discourse and advancing equitable access to cancer care in the country.
